Who Told You?

The other day, I had the rare opportunity to go out for coffee with a friend. This is big stuff in mommy world. You know, one of those events where you take all of the diapers out of your diaper bag and pretend it's a purse? Yes. That big.

But this blog isn't about how *exciting* it is to get in and out of the car without having to buckle/unbuckle anybody.

My friend shared something with me that impacted me, so I thought I'd pass it along to encourage you today. She was telling me about a person in her life who is a Christian, but has battled depression for a long, long time. My friend has been trying to be more active in speaking faith into this person's life, and one of the things she said went something like this:

When Adam and Eve fell in Genesis, they hid from God in shame because of their nakedness. One of the first things God said to them was, "Who told you you were naked?" So I'm asking you: "Who told you you were depressed?"

The obvious answer is "the devil told me." God didn't tell this woman she was depressed. The devil told her and she believed him.

Immediately, I knew this truth resonated with me. Who told me I was frustrated? Who told me I was angry? Who told me I wasn't beautiful enough? Who told me I wasn't doing a good job as a wife and mom? It certainly wasn't God. It wasn't anybody in my life. It was the devil lying to me, and I chose to believe him. But I'm gonna tell him to shut up from now on. ;)
