Quarters were tight. We went up with JP's parents, Ava and the twins. Four adults and five kids under the age of three were crammed into a one bedroom house. Our family stayed in the bedroom upstairs, and everybody else slept in a cement brick den area in the basement. But the memories and the scenery were well worth it! Ava & Rae enjoyed going for walks on the trail behind the house, playing at the park, and swimming in the indoor pool. We also made a trip to the pumpkin patch. I love autumn, and I'm thankful it returned at least for this one weekend so we could enjoy it!

Weekend in Voyager
This past weekend, we made a 2-hour hike to Danbury, WI and spent two nights at JP's grandparents home. They keep a summer home there, tucked into the beautiful woods in a community known as Voyager Village. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. It was autumn's paradise, the maples competing with the oaks for the most brilliant colors.

Seasonal Dyslexia
We are experiencing a case of seasonal dyslexia here in Minnesota. We're supposed to be at the peak of fall, but instead the snow has come. Trees with green leaves in fields of white. It's very confusing.
I almost cried when it first snowed. But today, after the second snowfall, I'm feeling more at peace with it. The flakes fell so softly and peacefully this morning, it was hard not to enjoy it. And with the promise of more fall-like weather ahead, I can accept this early taste of winter.
Nobody was more excited in our household than Rae. She is rediscovering a world of snowballs, snow angels, and snowmen. Here is our little snowman. She is so proud of him, and as he melts she continues to build him back up, packing snow here and packing snow there.

Ruby's 1-year Stats
Ruby finally had her 1-year checkup today. She was 22 pounds (70th percentile) and 30 3/4 inches (97th percentile). The funny thing is that she didn't grow in length at all from her 9 month appointment. Last time she was off the charts; this time she was 97th percentile. She is walking everywhere now, and is very happy about it.
Israel has a new favorite activity that she plays every day now. Every morning she "wakes up" her dolls and puts them in their "seats" in the "car." In reality, this consists of her taking them off the shelves and lining them up in rows next to each other on the steps. Every day she picks a new place to which they will journey. Popular destinations are Ava's house and Elijah's house. Sometimes it's the library, McDonalds, etc.
The dolls stay on the steps all day for us to trip over, then at bedtime Rae tucks them all in to their respective sleeping quarters. She's a good little mommy to all of them.

Ruby Can Walk!
Ruby has been able to take a few steps here and there for a couple weeks now, but on her birthday, she started walking in longer segments and with more control. I wasn't able to catch a good example on camera, so this is all you get for now!

God-Canceling Headphones
I read a tragic story in the news this week. A 16-year-old girl was walking down some train tracks listening to her iPod on high quality noise-canceling headphones. She never heard the blaring horn of the freight train approaching from behind. The train couldn't stop soon enough and struck her dead.I was immediately grieved, and also frustrated. If she had just had her music volume lower! If she had only been wearing cheap headphones! If she would have just stayed off the tracks to begin with! If the engineer had only seen her sooner and been able to slow down more! If only someone had seen her and been able to push her out of the way in time! All of these scenarios could have saved her life, and her family the grief of losing her.
Then I thought about my own life, and the lives of so many people out in the world. So many of us are like that girl, walking down a path we really shouldn't be on to begin with. It could be as severe as a drug or lust addiction or as "innocent" as overeating or being lazy. It could even be something completely non-physical, like an attitude problem: pride, anger, or bitterness. Whatever it is, we're walking smack in the middle of it, and we know we're not supposed to be there.
In our foolishness and stubborn pride, we put in our God-canceling headphones and listen to the lies, excuses and justifications for being there rather than heeding the blaring warnings given to us in the Word and through the Holy Spirit. If we stay on that path and continue to ignore the warnings, we're going to die. And I'm not just talking figuratively or spiritually -- this path could literally lead us to physical death!
As a Christian, the steps to avoid certain death sound so simple:
1.) Get off the tracks. You're not supposed to be there anyhow.
2.) Take out the headphones. No more excuses, no more lies.
3.) Listen to God and live.
But in reality, it takes a lot of discipline to break yourself of the bad habits that are killing us. God give us grace to simply do what's right.
For unbelievers, though, the concept might not be quite as simple. Maybe they have no idea that they're not supposed to be on those tracks. They don't know the Bible or how to hear the Holy Spirit. They've been taught all their lives that what they're listening to is fine and good.
It's our job, then, to run to those people and push them off the tracks. Help them take out the God-canceling headphones and hear the blaring truth: that the way they're going will only lead to death.
Now that I think about it, there's one more step for Christians:
4.) STAY OFF THE TRACKS.
Jesus threw himself in front of that train for us so we could live. We saw the train go by and how close we were to death, how unavoidable it would have been if He hadn't stepped in. For a while we were completely humbled and broken; but over time, we forgot what he did. We forgot how imminent the danger was.
So we get back on the tracks and walk down those same paths we were walking on before he rescued us. At first things seem fine. Then we hear the distant rumblings of a train. But the train is a long ways off, so we can keep going for a little while longer (and the first headphone goes in). We feel the ground start to tremble, but we're really having fun, so maybe just a little bit longer and we'll get off well in time for the train to go by (and the second headphone goes in). Now life and death are upon us.
What will it be?

Paradigms, Perception, and Emotions
"Paradigms power perception, and perceptions power emotions. Most emotions are responses to perception -- what you think is true about a given situation. If your perception is false, then your emotional response to it will be false too. So check your perceptions, and beyond that check the truthfulness of your paradigms -- what you believe. Just because you believe something firmly doesn't make it true. Be willing to reexamine what you believe."

State Fair 2009
We love the fair, and we were thrilled to make it twice this year; once with the kids, and once without.
Our first visit was sans children. We dropped the girls off with my parents and hooked up with our friends James and Alyssa. We mostly just ate and ate and ate, with some people watching thrown in for good times. We also met up with our friends Dave, Molly & Deb along the way.

Two days later, we returned to the fair with our darlings in tow. They were both awed by all of the sights, sounds and smells we encountered. We made it down the giant slide (my first time!) and onto the carousel. Rae got her first taste of cotton candy. Once we got home, I was appalled at what all I had fed my 11-month-old baby: corn dog, cheese curds, french fries, mini donuts, and ice cream, just to name a few!!!
We met up with our friends Sarah and Molly (again) this time. Thanks for the fun! Let's do it again next year!

Here we go 'round
This is a cute video of Ruby's new favorite thing to do when we go outside. She would do this all day long if I let her.
Ruby is 11 months old now! She is standing on her own and it won't be long until she walks. She's already taken one small step. What a joy she is to us.

Love Rejoices in the Truth
"Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth."Today my husband had a good word about this verse from the Bible's "love chapter." It encouraged me, so I thought I'd share it.
- I Cor 13:6
To J.P. and I (and I would assume all parents), it is very important that our children always feel free to be honest with us. We've witnessed and experienced the sad situation where children grow up lying to their parents, living double lives, and ultimately being spiritually separated from them, all because they feared telling their parents the truth. We want to create an environment where our children can be honest without fear, because they trust us and our reactions.
The secret lies here in this verse: "Love...rejoices with the truth." It's easy to rejoice with the truth when the truth is positive. But what about when the truth is negative?
So often when Rae does something wrong, I can see the struggle on her little face as to whether she should tell me or not. If she tells me the truth, I'm going to be upset. If she lies, she suffers the guilt and separation that it brings. When she chooses the lie, I usually know shes lying anyhow and she gets a consequence. But when she chooses the truth, she sees my disappointment, plus she still gets a consequence. It's a tough choice for a two year old!
If I, as a parent, can train myself to REJOICE when Rae chooses the truth, and relay that joy to her for choosing the truth, she is going to learn that honesty brings relief, joy, and a bond between Rae and Mommy. She still has to face the consequences for her actions, but she doesn't have to face my disappointment with her, because it won't be there. I'll be rejoicing that my daughter chooses to be honest with me.
My heart would break if my children were so afraid of facing my disappointment that they built a wall of lies between us. From now on, no matter what they've done, I'm going to try to always rejoice when my children tell the truth. Couple that with prayer, and I have a fresh hope that this will foster an environment where they always feel free to be honest with us even well into their adult lives.

Tie Dye and Party Hard
It was wonderful to see everybody at the party. Papa's family includes one beautiful wife, 6 kids (plus 4 kids-in-law), 8 grandkids (plus 6 married-ins/significant others), and 14 great-grandkids. It gets crowded, but the more the merrier!
We love you, Papa, and we're so proud to be a part of your legacy!
As a fun weekend project, I picked up a tie dye kit at Michael's and we had a lot of fun creating tie dyed t-shirts with Rae and Ava. Everybody tried a different technique, and we came out with some really fun designs. Being the nerds we are, we all wore our "matching" tie dyed shirts to Papa's party. Now Papa wants one, too...so I guess we'll be heading back to Michael's this week!

X Games at Home
We've been watching a lot of X Games at our house this week, and now there is a new event to add to the list: Extreme Bed Diving.
We were all playing on our queen bed tonight, and Ruby kept on getting too close to the edge for comfort. We decided to put some pillows down and allow her to crawl off the edge, hoping it would put the "fear of the edge" in her and she'd keep away from them.
Only one problem: she LOVED it! She laughed and snorted and wanted right back up to do it over and over again. Now it is a new favorite game. I guess we'll be keeping an EXTRA close eye when we play on the bed these days.

Cousin Week
We have been enjoying a fabulous week of time spent with cousins. Micah, Missy & co. arrived in MN for Missy's brother's wedding on Wednesday. We were at my parents' house waiting for them when they pulled in, and the fun hasn't stopped since.
The next day, my side of the family (minus Amber, Pete & kids) came out to our place for burgers and a bonfire.
Anna is a tiny little peanut! So sweet!
JP brought some old cabinets from a job site to burn, but it turns out they make a better fort when you add a cardboard roof.
Micah & Missy

Cousin week continued with a play date at my sister's house on Monday morning, followed by an impromptu dinner at JP's sister's house that night. Hats off to Lisa for preparing a delicious dinner for 10 on only 1/2 day's notice (those of you who know Lisa know she doesn't normally cook, much less for 10).
They came bearing gifts, including these jewels which Rae so dramatically displays
We had only limited time to spend with Micah as he had to report back to the base on Monday morning. We were able to see him again for a brunch on Sunday before he had to catch his flight. Missy and the kids stayed in MN, though, and will be here through the 11th.
On Friday we had some more friends come out to our place for a bonfire. The fire was short-lived, however, when we came up with the brilliant idea to play a game of guys vs. girls kickball. The women had a 8-month pregnant teammate, and the men had a teammate recovering from knee surgery 3 days before. Once the sun set, JP brought out the flood lights. When the rain started, we kept playing. When the 3-year-old got smacked in the head with a kickball, the pregnant lady's body gave out, and the rain really started coming down...we finally called it a game. :)

Florie and Ruby are proving to be partners in crime. They will be the ones to keep us on our toes as the years go by!
And finally, we had one more play date at my parent's house today, just for good measure. If you think it sounds exhausting...well, it is! But we're willing to do it in order to squeeze every minutes of fun we can out of Malachi, Zach and Anna.
